Conventional Cotton Poisions our World According to the Sustainable Cotton Project
Cotton uses A LOT of pesticides: Cotton uses about 25% of the world's insecticides and more than 10% of the pesticides. In the US, 25% of all pesticides used are applied to cotton.
Pesticides cause cancer: In California, 5 of the top 9 pesticides used on cotton are cancer-causing chemicals (cyanazine, dicofol, naled, propargite, and trifulralin). All of the top 9 pesticides used in California are labeled by the US Environmental Protection Agency as Category I or Category II materials, the most toxic classifications.
Conventional cotton kills: In India, 91% of male cotton farm workers regularly exposed to pesticides eight hours or more per day experience some type of health disorder, including chromosomal aberrations, cell death, and cell decay.
Cotton is big-business: Cotton fibers account for almost 50% of the textile market worldwide. Globally, nearly 90 million acres of cotton are grown. The US is the 2nd largest cotton producer in the world.
Pesticide use effects us all: As much as two-thirds of a cotton crop can creep into the food chain. Each year, half a million tons of cottonseed oil make its way into salad dressings, baked goods, and snack food; another 3 million tons of raw cottonseed oil are fed to beef and dairy cattle.
What Your Choice Means The choice to buy organic cotton is a vote in favor of a healthier air, water, and soil globally, plus a healthier life for all those who work in cotton country. In this way, organic cotton is a responsible social choice that expresses love in action.
Wearing or sleeping in organic cotton also means that you avoid any pesticide residues that may cling to the cotton fiber. In addition, many companies that design organic options choose non-toxic fabric dyes, finishing processes, and whitening agents (peroxide instead of dangerous chlorine bleach, which produces dioxin). You also avoid toxic fire retardants. Again, you protect your health and the health of our world.
But the benefits of organic cotton are not simply social or medical. The fact is that organic cotton generally feels softer and wears better over time than conventional cotton. And you certainly don't have to sacrifice style to go organic.
