Ameda Breast Shell Set

Ameda's Breast Shell Set is a smart solution for women facing difficulty with breastfeeding.

Many women experience pain in the first few weeks of breastfeeding. Pain can be due to an improper latch, so it's best to see a Lactation Consultant to check for a problem. However, even with a proper latch, you may initially experience some pain and damage to your nipples. Ameda's Breast Shell Set can help! The system comes with two different sets of backs, designed to address two common problems: inverted/flat nipples and sore, irritated nipples.

Inverted or flat nipples present a challenge when nursing since babies can latch on best to nipples that protrude. If your nipples don't usually stick out, you probably will experience mild to intense pain as baby begins each nursing session. This system comes with a set of backs that have a small hole at the areola. Wearing these shells gently encourages your nipples to regularly protrude so that latching is easier for your baby and more comfortable for you. You can use the inverting shells prenatally to set yourself up for breastfeeding success, or postnatally, once you've realized that your nipples may not protrude enough to make nursing comfortable.

The other set of backs have a wide opening and are designed to help sore nipples heal. As any nursing book will tell you, damaged nipples recover fastest if allowed to airdry and protected from further irritation from a bra or shirt. Are you going to walk around topless all day? Ameda's shells create a protected space for your nipples and have holes at the top for continuous air circulations, which promotes healing. To control leakage while wearing the shells, purchase Ameda's 24-pack of pure cotton aborbant rolls (sold separately) to insert in the bottom of each shell. These rolls will absorb any drip milk, keeping you dry as you heal.

Bonus Tip: I used the inverted shells to accomplish three things at once! They drew out my flat nipples, which made nursing MUCH more comfortable and allowed my damaged nipples to heal quickly. Additionally, when used without the cotton rolls and with frequent cleaning, I used them to collect breast milk - which I saved and froze for later use! At the beginning of a nursing session, I would place one shell on the breast that I wasn't using to feed baby. Since nursing causes both breasts to let down, I would collect a generous portion of milk in the shell each time. I rarely had to pump and had a freezer full of milk!
